An hour later I was still sitting at the computer. Erimem and Helena had gone. I was left on computer duty. It made sense for me to stay. I knew the computer system better than either of them – meaning I knew a little bit about it while they knew absolutely bugger all. What’s the old saying? In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king? I was the best option we had.

That didn’t mean I had to like it.

On the other hand, I was getting the hang of using the cameras to track Erimem and Helena’s progress. Communicating with them wasn’t easy. Our phones didn’t work, so all I could do was use the camers in there are to pass rudimentary messages. If things were safe I’d swing the camera up and down like a nod. If there was a problem I’d move it from side to side, like I was shaking my head. Like I said, it wasn’t great but it was all we could manage.

Every now and then, Erimem would stop at a camera and ask me questions. Was there a crowd heading for the square? Was there any sign of Angela or Razor? Were the police going to do anything? She asked her questions and I replied, then they moved on.

One of the odd things I noticed was that Erimem and Helena ran in a very similar way. They weren’t all pumping knees and arms. They were economical and used as little effort as possible. When I was at school, I ran. I was good too. Maybe I’d have been better than good if I ran the way they did. Or maybe they’d move faster if they ran my way.

Or maybe I was just trying to distract myself from thinking about what was going to happen.

They were on the last part of their journey. A couple of hundred metres from where they were going. They dipped out of sight for half a minute as they crossed a patch of rubble, and I breathed easier as I picked them up on the far side. I know Erimem is a warrior and she can take care of herself. She’s small but she’s been trained. She can take down men twice her size. Helena’s a doctor. She saves lives, she doesn’t get into fights. Erimem is her friend, too, and I know she sees Erimem as family because Erimem and Ibrahim are related. Still… is that a good enough reason for her to risk her life? I suppose it must be. We always look out for family and friends.

They cut along a side street. It was more or less empty bar a few people hurrying home. I guessed they wouldn’t want to miss the excitement on TV. There was an abandoned restaurant on the corner. They stopped in the doorway just ahead of the restaurant and pressed themselves back against the door. They waited a few minutes and then they twitched as they heard the restaurant’s door open.
